Hello my lovelies,

Pattern mixing is an up-and-coming fashion trend that seems to have no intention of leaving anytime soon! Plaids, florals, stripes and graphic shapes are all getting on the “halo-halo” (mix-mix in Tagalog) bandwagon!

A patterned outfit does not need to be as crazy as the Spring 2016 fashion shows. Realistically speaking, who has the time and budget to re-create these spectacular outfits?

Subtle patterns in muted colors are an easy way to dip your toes into the pool of pattern mixing. From the runway to the hallway of your school, you can create a classroom appropriate outfit that includes multiple different patterns.

A monochromatic outfit is the easiest way to mix patterns without overwhelming the senses. This black and white polka dot shirt is from Forever 21, thrifted at Goodwill for $5/200 pesos. The dots are so small they blend into the background of the shirt. I paired the shirt with a taffeta and tulle skirt from Bench. The multi-toned stripes give the circle skirt a flattering sheen. The garterized waistband also gives a visual separation between the two patterns. To break up the black monotony I added a pair of red peep-toe pumps from Payless, but flats would work better in the classroom! =)

Pattern mixing does not have to be intimidating! Starting small can help your eyes get used to the idea! Pairing a patterned shift with a clutch in a different pattern is another easy way to dress “halo-halo.” Throwing a patterned scarf over your shoulders or knotted around your neck is an easy way to bring in an additional element! Combining florals with stripes or graphic shapes with gingham are two other possibilities!

If you are wanting to mix patterns at an “intermediate” level, check out Instagram users https://www.instagram.com/queserasarah/ and https://www.instagram.com/polishedwhimsy/ They always dress in a classy manner, using creative ways to include multiple patterns in their outfits!

Keep mixing it up my lovelies!

Xoxo
